Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier has heaped praised on the technical ability of Everton ace Gylfi Sigurdsson despite his ‘serious lack of pace’.
The 29-year-old was on the scoresheet once again in midweek when he netted a brace against relegation-threatened Cardiff City on Tuesday night.
He will be hoping to prove his worth in the middle of the park once again when his side host neighbours Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News (02/03/2019 at 12:55 pm), former Southampton man Le Tissier shared some interesting thoughts on Everton’s playmaker.
“They [Everton] certainly do [rely on him for goals],” Le Tissier told Soccer Saturday. “He was very good again on Tuesday night. Took both of his goals very well. I have been a big admirer of this boy.
“When you have got that serious lack of pace, he hasn’t got a turn of foot, you have to be technically very, very good to be able to play in this Premier League at a high standard. For him to do that without that pace, I think he has been excellent in these last few years and a really, really good footballer. A clever footballer.”
Everton supporters will be well aware that if Sigurdsson can turn it on against Liverpool then it will increase their chances of picking up points against their rivals.
Over the course of the season, the Iceland international has scored 11 goals in the Premier League and supplied three assists for his teammates [transfermarkt].
During his career, Sigurdsson has had great success on the international stage with his home country, shone at Swansea, but he did struggle during his time at Tottenham.
He has fared better at Goodison Park and he will be hoping to continue his rise by proving his worth against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who will go top with a win on Sunday.
