Even the most ardent of Everton supporter would probably admit that the Toffees aren’t a patch on Liverpool this season.
Their city rivals have been in irresistible form and have steamrollered their way to the top of the Premier League with a prolonged period of imperious displays that have catapulted them from also-rans to chief contenders.
Everton, on the other hand, have been flaky at best, and have stumbled their way into a half-hearted battle for a Europa League spot. Marco Silva’s first season at the helm has been decidedly underwhelming, and things weren’t really meant to be going as they are.
That’s why most Everton fans, even the most optimistic, will be going into this weekend’s Merseyside derby with a sense of foreboding.
Despite nearly getting a point out of their bitter rivals last time around, but for the intervention of a crossbar and some unconvincing goalkeeping from Jordan Pickford, the Blues will feel that any hopes of replicating that kind of heroic performance are slim at best.
But Robbie Savage doesn’t.
According to his predictions in the Mirror, the BT pundit believes that the Toffees will snatch a 2-1 win over the Reds.
As pleasant a prospect as that would be for Everton, the reality is that it is very, very unlikely. A win of any kind would incredible, but a win that could put a huge dint in their neighbours’ title ambitions would be nothing short of dreamland.
Deep down, however, the Goodison faithful will know that it is just wishful thinking, and as such, you can’t help wondering what Savage is on about.
