Man Utd’s 4 main summer transfer targets identified by Ed Woodward

Ed Woodward accepts significant investment is needed to restore Manchester United’s place among Europe’s elite once again.

United are facing an exit from the Champions League at the last-16 stage following their 2-0 home defeat to PSG.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had overseen an excellent unbeaten run in domestic competitions but taking on the French champions was a bridge too far.

It remains to be seen if he will get the job full-time with his chances depending on the FA Cup and United finishing in the top four.

Former boss Jose Mourinho insisted the only way United will get back to the top is by further significant investment in the squad – and Woodward recognises that.

United need a top central defender while they also could do with new full-backs on both sides, along with a right-sided midfielder.

Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly remains their No.1 target, having been on United’s radar for some time.

The Italian giants want close to £90m for the Senegalese defender, who fits the profile of what United are looking for.

Lucas Hernandez of Atletico Madrid can play centrally or at left-back while Nikola Milenkovic is as versatile on the right. The Fiorentina defender is seen as the cheaper option of the two.

United were also heavily linked with Douglas Costa under Mourinho and there are suggestions he would consider leaving Juventus in the summer.
