MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could give Anthony Martial a new role in the club’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Sunday.
Manchester United manager Solskjaer was without Martial for the Boxing Day victory over Huddersfield.
The Red Devils survived the absence of their star man – with a Paul Pogba brace and Nemanja Matic strike giving them all three points.
Speaking after the match, Manchester United boss Solskjaer explained Martial’s absence by saying: “He must have had a bad chef over Christmas.
“If it’s food poisoning or something. I don’t know, but he has fallen ill over Christmas.”
Marcus Rashford has so far been Solskjaer’s trusted option up top.
The England international impressed against both Cardiff and Huddersfield, sparking hopes he can kick on now Jose Mourinho is no longer in charge.
Yet the Manchester Evening News say Martial could be deployed in a No 9 role instead.
Rashford has sparkled in recent times.
But Martial is the club’s top scorer this season and could be fielded there instead.
The France international has spent the last two-and-a-half years shunted on the wing.
But Martial’s preferred position is to play down the middle.
When he first signed for United, the 23-year-old played in a central position.
And he impressed, too, scoring a memorable brace away at Southampton.
In order to accommodate captain Wayne Rooney, though, Van Gaal changed his position.
And Martial has been stuck there ever since.
Mourinho often overlooked him in their first season at Old Trafford, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic his preferred option.
And the arrival of Romelu Lukaku in July 2017 also damaged his hopes of playing centrally.
