MANCHESTER UNITED need to track down a new version of former central defender Nemanja Vidic.
That’s according to former Liverpool and England midfielder Jamie Redknapp.
He feels that United are lacking a dominant figure in the mould of Vidic who won 10 trophies during his spell at Old Trafford.
Alongside Rio Ferdinand, the Serbian hard man formed one of the best defensive partnerships in the club’s history.
And Redknapp referenced Virgil Van Dijk’s impact at Liverpool when describing how United could improve to challenge next year.
“If they got in the top four four it would be incredibly hard not to give Solskjaer the job,” he told talkSPORT.
“United certainly still need to sign a few players to improve the squad, though.
“They need to find the next Nemanja Vidic.
“You only need to look at Liverpool to see the impact Virgil van Dijk has been made at Liverpool.
“He’s turned them into serious title contenders.
“The pressure on Solskjaer will come when he has to go and sign players.
“Ferguson wasn’t just a great manager, he was brilliant when it came to recruitment too.
“He identified the right type of player who more times than not was a big success for Manchester United football club.
“United’s signings of late haven’t been great at all.
“There are some fantastic talents on their books, but they need a couple more if they are going to seriously challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the title.”
United, who have won eight consecutive away games, take on Southampton tomorrow (3pm).
A win could take them back into the top four if Arsenal fail to beat Tottenham earlier in the day.
