Liverpool ‘definitely’ chasing Italian ace as transfer window draws to a close expert

LIVERPOOL are chasing ‘the new Andrea Pirlo’ – an Italian transfer expert has revealed.

Liverpool have yet to make a signing in the January window.

And despite their interest in Brescia star Sandro Tonali, no deal is likely to be done this month.

That’s according to Italian football expert David Amoyal, who co-hosts the Calcioland podcast.

When asked about the Reds being in for the Serie B midfielder, he said: “This player has got a lot of hype – he kind of looks like Pirlo.

“He plays for Brecia, which is Pirlo’s hometown.

“There’s many clubs interested in Tonali.

There’s multiple clubs in the Premier League, Liverpool’s definitely one of them.

“Brescia’s president Cellino is asking for a huge return for him.

“As it stands Juventus and Inter are still the favourites, but definitely Liverpool are in the mix.

“How concrete their interest, and how close they are now remains to be seen.

Premier League leaders Liverpool are back in action tonight when they host Leicester at Anfield.

And Jurgen Klopp looks set to have key defender Virgil van Dijk fit to play after a bout of illness.

The centre-back has been unwell since the club returned from a training camp in Dubai last week but was back on the pitch with the squad at Melwood yesterday.

“Virg was a little bit ill but he trained yesterday.

He will train today and then we will see,” said the Reds boss.

Klopp has had a number of injury issues but most of the short-term problems have cleared up just in time.

“Dejan (hamstring) is fine.

Gini (Wijnaldum) trained, Fabinho will train today.

Trent (Alexander-Arnold) getting closer and closer – looks all very positive – but will not be ready for tomorrow.
