Marcel Brands has responded to transfer rumours linking the Blues to Mohammed Ihattaren by admitting: “I’d like to have him at Everton tomorrow.”
Ihattaren has quickly established himself as one of the brightest young prospects at Brands’ former club PSV and the Blues chief has been keeping a close eye on the development of the Netherlands Under-19 starlet.
Ihattaren only turned 17 earlier this week but Brands is in no doubt about the quality and potential of the teenage midfielder after watching him make his first-team debut at PSV last month.
Asked about potential interest in Ihattaren, director of football Brands admitted he would love to bring him to Goodison Park, but explained how a move to the Premier League would be counter-productive at this stage of the youngster’s fledgling career.
However, Brands hinted that the 17-year-old is firmly on the Everton radar for the future.
He told Voetbal International (via Sport Witness ): “Frankly, I’d like to have him at Everton tomorrow.
“He’s so good, but I don’t think that’s the path he should take.
“He will need an intermediate step later. In that respect, Mo is good at PSV.
“The club plays European football, he has a great chance of playing time and he is in the national teams.
“If he now went abroad, he has a lot less guarantees. The step to the Premier League is really big and it can also go wrong with a talent.
“Now he has a coach who sees it in him, I would say cherish that. The big money will then come naturally.”
Ihattaren, who has already been linked to Barcelona in Spanish media, has made three first-team appearances for the Dutch side.
