Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva has admitted that he is not sure about Lucas Torreira.
The 22-year-old joined the Gunners from Sampdoria in a £26.4m deal last summer and immediately impressed fans with his dogged performances in the middle of the park.
But Silva does not appear to be convinced by his performances so far this season, admitting that he is not sure the north London outfit have found a player who can compare to N’Golo Kante or Fernandinho.
The former Arsenal midfielder made a name for himself in that holding role during the club’s Invincibles season of 2003/04 as he partnered Patrick Vieira to an unbeaten Premier League campaign.
The club have been left searching for his successor in defensive midfield since his departure in 2008 but Silva does not believe it is Torreira.
“Arsenal in the last few years have tried to find a player for this position, which is not so easy nowadays because football has changed a lot,” Silva told talkSPORT.
“I have seen so many clubs play without this holding midfielder. At some point, it became not so important but then teams started to realise this player is important to the structure of the defensive part of the team. Now we have Kante – but he is out of position. I prefer him to be in the centre. At City, Fernandinho.
“Arsenal bought Torreira but the first season is quite hard for him. I don’t know if Arsenal have found the player to be the holding midfielder yet.
“I don’t think so, when I see their games compared to the other teams, when you compare to Fernandinho and Kante, I don’t see the same style of players.”
