Everton loanee enjoys dream debut in 4-0 win, manager hails his impact

Everton allowed the defender to head to the Championship on loan in January.

Everton have certainly been struggling at the back this season. Michael Keane’s good early season form has deserted him. Kurt Zouma has been erratic. Yerry Mina the same.

The full-back positions have not been much better. Lucas Digne’s defensive frailties have been a concern whilst Seamus Coleman is simply not the same player he was.

The result has been an Everton side that has been very leaky at the back since the turn of the year.

So perhaps it was a mistake to send one of their defensive players away in January?

Everton allowed Mason Holgate a loan move to West Brom until the end of the season, after he barely featured for the Toffees in the first part of the campaign.

He has since been in fantastic form at his temporary club. The 22-year-old has played six times for his new club and impressed in all his appearances.

Undoubtedly, Everton could have used him over the past month or so. With central defenders and right-backs out of form, the Yorkshireman could have provided Marco Silva with another option at the back. Instead, he has largely had to make do with what he has, a group of under-performing and confidence stricken defenders.

Holgate could have proved to be a different, perhaps even better option.
