Roberto Firmino’s comments about Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko being one of the best players in the Premier League has garnered a strong reaction on social media.
Despite playing alongside the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for Liverpool, the forward felt it was necessary to include the France international in this esteemed list of players.
“We have great players in English football, it’s hard to select one as the outright best. That’s why it’s the most popular league with many quality teams,” the Brazilian told Goal. “We can talk about the goalscorers Salah and Harry Kane.
“We also have Gabriel Jesus, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan in Manchester City, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United, Moussa Sissoko and Mousa Dembele at Tottenham, Willian and Eden Hazard at Chelsea, Mesut Ozil at Arsenal.
“Not to mention Mane, Emre Can, Dejan Lovren and the many other good players we have here at Liverpool. It is a league with great stars. Virtually everyone I mentioned will be at the World Cup. The level is very high.”
Unsurprisingly many have taken to Twitter and shared their thoughts on what Firmino had to say.
Take a look at the best responses….
Sissoko joined the Lilywhites for a then club record transfer fee of £30m from Newcastle United on deadline day in the 2016 summer transfer window, but struggled to replicate his best form – shown during Euro 2016 – throughout his debut season in north London.
He failed to score across any competition in the 2016/17 campaign and was heavily tipped to be one of those sold by head coach Mauricio Pochettino during the summer.
However, he stayed put and is enjoying a much improved second year under the Argentine tactician. Despite not being a regular in the side, the 28-year-old has scored twice and weighed in with five assists in a total of 40 appearances.
